Stonemilker - Oculus Rift + 2D + application

Recommended Posts

Just back from Rough Trade East and the Oculus Rift showing.

After a bit of a queue because the small sound-proof room only allows for one person at a time, once plugged into the headset etc, it's definitely a strange experience right from the start. I was fearing it would be some naff Lawnmower Man type experience... but, while it's far from perfect, it is quite lovely.

The 'video' itself is very simple. Björk giving a moving performance of the song on the empty beach, in the neon yellow dress (which has the sewn up pearl cluster on the chest, from the end of the 'Family' video-piece).

The mix of the song was a pretty surprise. An acoustic/strings-only version with no beats at all, but the sound of the sea waves throughout. Simple, but very lovely.

The only trickery in the video is when there's moments when she suddenly duplicates herself and runs around "behind" you, so there's two, three and at one point, four Björk's surrounding you, each giving a unique performance. Some really close to you, some a few steps back.

The effect is a bit similar to the mutant in 'Xmen 3: The Last Stand' who clones himself multiple times... they essentially just walk out of each other. Only, Björk's cloning is a lot more subtle icon_wink.gif

It's quite fun following her around with the headset in the parts where she is slowly walking around. Other times it's like a cute game of hide and seek and she hurries around leaving you spinning around trying to work out where she is around you. The beach location works beautifully as it just gives a great sense of realism, in an otherwise virtual reality.

The only criticisms are with the Oculus rift itself. It very easily blurs in parts, and the goggles steam up quite easily as they are so snug around your eyes. This is kinda frustrating as it spoils the illusion just as you're getting into it. They need to add ventilation holes to stop them steaming up, and somehow find a more assured way to connect the monitor / smartphone to the goggles so it doesn't blur when the perspective is a bit off.

I think these fruatrations with the headset stopped me getting the full emotional clout of the piece, but it's really stamped a place in my head... so I don't think it spoilt it for me too much. It is a very beautiful piece for sure, and a great experiement.

It really didn't feel like a 'Music Video' at all though, despite the subtle continuity from 'Family' with the costume and location. It's definitely more of an installation piece.

I asked one of the developers who were there if there were plans to turn it into a 2D "music video" for just general distribution, and he genuinely had no idea. He said it wouldn't be impossible, but would be damn difficult as the 360° camera just isn't designed to be reformatted into a 2D flat moving image. It's kinda just a one off experiment really, so who knows if it has a future beyond the headset. It definitely doesn't feel like a "music video" though, and having seen it now, I can live with it not becoming a music video after this.

I could definitely see this being more of an interactive, browser based "webeo" again though. As it feels a bit like browsing arond Google Maps at times. I definitely wouldn't say no to them trying to make a proper video out of it though. icon_wink.gif

So yeah... Not so fussed on the headset itself, still feels like they have a lot of work to do on it to really feel like "virtual reality". I think the feeling I got from it though through the blurring and steaming up lens was like a deep sea diver, washed up on the beach only for Björk to appear around me and I'm trying to keep up with her through my diving bell helmet. icon_smile.gif
