Meredith Monk - the Gish Prize 2017

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

A: I'm finally doing a project with Björk that we've been trying to get going for about five years. She did a cover of "Gotham Lullaby" - not on an album, it was just on the Internet - and I heard it and wrote her a card. It was a really nice version, which kept the spirit of the piece but in her own way, instead of just trying to imitate me.

Now – astonishingly – in her sixth decade of making music (late next year she will reach her 70th birthday) Meredith Monk shows little sign of slowing down. Projects currently underway include a large-scale piece about ecology with the working title of On behalf of Nature; a song project with the Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk; and a recording project with Ursula Oppens and Bruce Brubaker that will survey her solo piano music. All of which will undoubtably bear the inimitable stamp of one of contemporary music’s great innovators.
